Although I was happy how the Dogtra IQ-Plus turned out for play use, the included collar wasn't up to my leather liking standards so I took the time to make my own BDSM collar platform for it.
I'll try not to repeat too much, but for core shock unit info, check out my earlier article at "DOGTRA IQ-PLUS REMOTE COLLAR". After a good amount of research I found the Dogtra iQ Plus Remote Trainer to be a very suitable shock unit for a human collar due to its overall compact size, small yet easy to use remote, rechargeable main unit and remote, no on/off switch on main unit, and great range. Functionality wise the IQ Plus offers 400 yard max range, shock power control from 0 to 100, 2 collars can be controlled with 1 remote, and is even waterproof. The main buttons include: N(Nick) for a quick shock, C(Constant) for rapid shock lasting as long as the button is pressed, and P(Page) for a vibration feature, great for warnings or just getting the wearer's attention.
Some of course may be worried about using a shock collar on a human, with these being rated for small dogs they are going to be plenty safe for humans. New short prongs are also installed as typically shock collar prongs are made longer for dogs with hair. Simple stainless steel caps are used to create enough contact while still being comfortable.
Despite that the included collar strap with the IQ-Plus is functional, it didn't match any of my other gear being shiny vinyl and all. Before I move on, it is worth noting the vinyl strap is pretty flexible where you can size it from thigh placement all the way down to a wrist or around male genitalia. Since I had already been working on a utility collar design it was a pretty logical step to take that foundation and try and integrate the shock unit with it.
When in a collar setup I preferred having the shock unit on the back since when in the front it gets a bit in the way for attachment functionality or say oral duty. When on the sides the shock unit is generally out of the way, but the shock it delivers becomes much more TENS style causing muscles to flex rather than just giving static shock feeling. Thus with D-ring needing to be in the front and shock unit in the back, about the only place for the buckle was on the side. For the other side I left the small D-ring on the side to keep strap alignment. The end result is a little asymmetric visually, but I haven't had any issues with it functionality wise. I had one suggestion for a 2 buckle version, but have concerns it would then just add more bulk and likely some production issues where being able to rotate the strap on 1 rivet point is critical in the current workflow. Nonetheless, possible if one didn't care about rivets ending up on the worn side.
Some collar details if unfamiliar with the DSG Utility layout: One of the biggest additions is hook and loop fastener to make applying the collar easier and to prevent the splitting effect during rough play. Splitting refers to the strap overlap in the buckle area and with heavy movement the ends can drift vertically creating the split. Application wise it helps a lot to get the starting desired tightness and then can take your time tightening the buckle without worrying about the collar falling off. There is just enough hook and loop to tackle these problems while staying out of sight when the collar is actually on, thus keeping a sexy classic look.
Garment leather is used to make the liner which acts as padding for the interior and edges. There is just enough to make them comfortable without over doing it on padding which tends to result in a bulky look. The liner also makes it so there is limited metal directly touching the skin, thus much less maintenance or allergy concerns. Of course the shock unit contact points have to be inner accessible, but there are no other rivets.
For other small details all edges are beveled / smoothed and I make sure to include keepers so the slack can be properly secured and everything looks sleek and proper. Approx 2.125" wide with lining, with main strap using .75" buckle and D-rings, 2"ish of main size adjustment zone. Main D-ring is screw on style so ring can be swapped or taken out. The collar slots on the IQ Plus are pretty slim, so the main buckle strap is a bit more thin than I'd like, but I was still able to make it work.
